Manatee may allow phosphate mine

Published By: Charlotte Sun

Editor:

On Jan. 15, the Manatee County Board of Commissioners, under the pressure of a threatened lawsuit, intend to allow a phosphate mine on the Altman tract.

One of many problems with this is that wetlands at the headwaters of Horse Creek will be destroyed irreparably. Horse Creek is the most essential freshwater source to the Peace River, and essential to the Charlotte Harbor Estuary.

This unfortunate decision will affect the region for generations. Don't believe the ridiculous ""we love the land" propaganda ads. It is important that anyone who wants to protect the Peace River attend the meeting and stand up for saving what we value in Florida.

The address is the Manatee Administration Building, 1112 Manatee Ave. W. in Bradenton. Also look up the commissioners at mymanatee.org and voice your opinion.
